Adrian Hayes, an Oscar-winning actor, and Celeste Hayes, a Grammy-winning singer, were obsessed with beautiful faces and flawless things. Their daughter was born looking like a wrinkled monkey. When she cried, she sounded like a frog. The whole hospital room complained. They nicknamed her Toad and sent her to live with her grandmother Maggie in a small town.
Eighteen years later, Violet got into Harvard Business School. Only then did her parents agree to let her come home. She arrived in a cap, sunglasses, and a mask. Her father frowned and asked what she was hiding. Her mother laughed, saying Violet would only look worse standing next to Sienna.
Sienna took Violet’s hand and called beauty a burden, telling her she was blessed to be ugly because nobody looks, nobody hears, nobody cares. Maggie had sent letters to Violet’s parents every month, saying Violet got prettier every day and local boys were climbing the fence to glimpse her. Maggie sent photos too. Adrian and Celeste never opened the letters and never looked at the pictures. They had no idea what Violet had become.
Violet asked for her room. Her mother answered politely, then caught herself and explained that the room used to be Sienna’s dressing room, and Violet could not stay there long. When Violet’s voice caught her attention, Celeste softened and said Violet could stay until she graduated or landed a job. To Adrian, she remarked that with a voice like that and a face like Violet’s, the girl would never make it on camera. Violet’s legal name was Violet Haze because Maggie chose it when the school needed a name and her parents kept saying they were working on it. Maggie wanted her to grow up free and strong like a wild violet.
At dinner, a maid called her Toad while Sienna was called Miss Sienna. Before going downstairs, Violet put the mask back on because her mother had said she would make them lose their appetite. Her father told her to wear whatever she brought but keep it low key for Sienna’s birthday party and not humiliate the family. A butler announced Mr. Whitmer had arrived, and her father told Violet to have lunch in her room and stay out of sight. Sienna said she could handle hosting the guests as their daughter on her own. Their parents said nothing.
At Sienna’s birthday party, Violet was called downstairs for cake, but the cake was already gone—served to the butler, the maids, and even the two dogs. Ethan Whitmer, the fiancé their families had arranged when they were kids, humiliated her in front of everyone. He said he would never marry some ugly girl, and his wife would be someone like Sienna. Then Sienna reached for Violet’s mask. She ripped it from Violet’s face. Every eye at the party locked onto Violet.
