Claire, Black's former lover, is diagnosed with cancer and ends their relationship with a lie: she claims she is marrying a richer man. Black, heir to the Creston Group, had offered to give up his inheritance for her. After the breakup, Claire finds she is pregnant. Her illness worsens, and she dies while Daisy is small. Daisy is sent to an orphanage with the box Claire left her.
Claire is dead, but she follows Daisy as a soul. She cannot be seen. Daisy's wish that her mother would hug her has no answer. Before Claire died, she came to Black for help more than once; the last time she brought Daisy, he refused to believe the child was his and sent them away with a bank card.
At Christmas, Daisy goes to Black's home to spend the holiday with him. He does not know Claire is dead or that Daisy is his daughter. He treats Daisy as Claire's bastard and drives her out. Later, after finding Daisy in the snow rummaging through a trash can, Black brings her back home, but his contempt does not let up.
At Black's house, Daisy refuses a bed and sleeps on the sofa because Claire used to lie there with her. She hides food at meals for a mother she believes is still coming. Megan, who is in Black's house, notices the smell. Black tries to throw away the bag of saved food; Daisy grabs it back, and the box she carries falls to the floor. A corner of Claire's postcard shows: December 28, and the nickname Star—the name Black and Claire once chose for their future child. Black forbids Daisy to use it and insists she is not his daughter.
Before December 28, Helen, the orphanage mistress, and Cat, the orphanage matron, come to Black's house to take Daisy back. Claire has been dead two years. Black still refuses to let Daisy go unless Claire comes herself. Helen is the person Claire entrusted with money and prewritten messages for Daisy.
On December 28, Black takes Daisy to the postcard’s address and finds Claire's grave. A caretaker confirms Claire has been dead two years and that today is her death anniversary. Messages and money transfers from Claire's name keep arriving on schedule. Black accuses Claire of faking her death to fool him.
The box has already fallen open; the proof inside is what Black can no longer deny. Daisy is his daughter. The contempt he aimed at her gives way to remorse and guilt.
