Felix is the Angel of Wealth—three hundred years of handling money, no vacation. His grandfather god sends him to be born into the Vanderbilt family in Manhattan. The birth goes wrong. The doctor reports a severe birth defect and calls the boy mentally retarded.

Alexander Vanderbilt, Chloe’s billionaire husband, orders the baby sent to an orphanage. Isabella is pregnant with his healthy son. He divorces Chloe on the spot, cancels her cards, and has security throw her out with the baby.

In a motel, Felix speaks. He is the Angel of Wealth, and the Vanderbilt father was blind to call him an idiot. Chloe is shaken. Alexander’s man arrives with a severance agreement and a threat to freeze Chloe’s own accounts. Chloe refuses: “I will never throw my son away.”

Felix cannot conjure cash yet, but he can sense where money is. He points Chloe to an old stock account with $10,000 and to Ocean Salvage, a company the news calls bankrupt. She puts everything in. The stock climbs to $35,000, then doubles to $100,000. Chloe cashes out. Alexander calls it dumb luck and keeps her old assets frozen.

Felix senses a massive golden glow at Chelsea flea market. Before they get there, Chloe tries to pawn her grandmother’s necklace; Alexander has blacklisted anyone who buys from her. At the market, Alexander and Isabella mock Chloe. Isabella pays $1 million for a necklace just to spite her. Chloe pays $10 for a broken wooden box propping up a table leg, a toy chest for Felix.

At the Sodabee spring appraisal event, the box is eighteenth-century French royal mahogany holding the lost Fabry imperial egg. Bids reach $20 million. Isabella’s $1 million necklace is appraised as industrial rhinestones worth about $50. Chloe warns Alexander to keep Isabella on a leash.

Old Madam Vanderbilt, Alexander’s grandmother, hears Isabella’s account of the humiliation. Isabella vows that Chloe and her son will pay. Chloe and Felix now have money, and Felix’s goal is to make her the richest woman in Manhattan and take back everything Alexander took from them.
