Wendy Harper's modern childcare saves Prince Ino, draws Serena Orion's jealousy, and melts Rhaen Drake's cold heart. A coup still threatens the changes she brings—and whatever is growing between her and Rhaen.
Pediatric nurse Wendy Harper is pulled from a hospital into the dragon realm. A system lets her understand dragons under three years old. At the palace she is allowed only to watch Prince Ino, the black dragonet and King Rhaen Drake’s infant brother. When Ino will not stop crying, Wendy finds a brooch pin digging into his back and removes it.
Rhaen questions her for touching the prince. The brooch belongs to Serena Orion, the royal chief dragon nanny; Serena calls the injury an accident and the brooch a blanket pin. Wendy points to Rhaen’s cloak, whose beast-repelling herb hurts Ino’s nose. Rhaen burns the cloak and sets a one-day trial: 1,000 gold coins if Ino improves, or Wendy and Serena both leave.
Wendy traces Ino’s bloating and rash to an allergy to golden dragon milk, blocks Serena’s sleeping powder and isolation, and gets Rhaen to stay with Ino at night. The Dowager Queen, Rhaen’s mother, puts Wendy in charge of Ino’s hundred-day banquet. At the banquet Wendy challenges the golden lamp; Rhaen dims it by half: "Tradition is for the living, not for burying children." Serena pushes the sacred pearl ritual. Ino puts the relic in his mouth and chokes; the healer declares him dead. Wendy keeps working on him and revives him. Rhaen removes Serena from charge and names Wendy Ino’s Royal caretaker, with final say over his food, medicine, ceremonies, and safety.
Later Wendy helps Lumi, a blue dragonet, spit water without a test, and public training that humiliates royal dragonets is ended. Wendy cares for five dragonets together, including Ino, who feels left out when Wendy holds the others. Before the dragonet showcase, Wendy finds wing waking flower hidden in calming incense; it can cause fevers and early wing flapping. She seals the burners and locks down the hall.
A burner still appears at the showcase. The dragonlings lose control, Rhaen holds the city, and Wendy brings the children back. When a rope fails, Rhaen turns into a dragon to catch Wendy. The hired saboteur confesses to taking gold and powder; Wendy finds a ring bearing House Orion’s mark. Rhaen orders the saboteur to the dungeon. Serena remains in the shadows, and Wendy resolves that this time Serena will not stay hidden there.
A coup still comes. Rhaen’s cold heart softens as Wendy keeps saving the children, and the coup will test both the reforms she has forced and the bond forming between them.
