Lucien, the son of the Sun God, gave up his divinity and throne for Selene. Six years later he lives as a blacksmith and raises their daughter Lyra alone. It is Lyra's birthday; she has made a necklace for the mother who has not come home in three years. At the Holy City Arena, Orion, the empire's Paladin, orders his sacred beast to attack Lyra during the celebration. Lucien shields her, but the beast injures Lyra. Orion fakes exhaustion; Selene goes to him.
Lucien takes Lyra to the House of Healing; the corruption is beyond mortal power. He kneels before Helios in the Pantheon. Helios refuses to save Lyra and offers one final chance: return to the sun throne or lose heaven forever. Lucien chooses his wife and daughter. Helios will not save her but points him to someone who can.
At the Life Temple, Orion denies the attack and Selene turns on Lucien. Orion makes dark energy burst from Lyra's wound, then pretends the corruption hit him. Selene heals Orion while Lyra is dying. Lucien follows Selene to the healing chamber. Orion admits, "I ordered my sacred beast to strike your daughter." Lucien attacks him; Selene stops Lucien, calls marrying him her biggest mistake, and threatens to end the marriage if he pulls this again.
Lyra asks to call her mother one last time. Orion answers first, then Selene takes the communicator from him and tells Lucien to shut up about Lyra, that she is sick of his lies, and that she never wants to see him again. Lucien calls her cruel and smashes the communicator. Lyra gives him a handmade necklace for Selene and asks that her eyes go to another girl. She dies. The Elder Priest sees the Eyes of God mark on her forehead. Helios orders the Divine Arbiter to remind Selene what it means to forsake the blood of a god.
The Divine Arbiter confronts Selene at the Empire Day celebration: as Oracle she failed her duty, as mother she failed her child. Selene plans to go to the funeral, expose Lucien as a liar, and prove Lyra is fine. At the Hall of Fallen Souls, she sees the coffin.
