Six years ago, Ella's wedding night turns into a trap. Arthur married her only because his grandmother forced him to, after Ella saved the old woman's life. Now the grandmother is dead, and Arthur wants out of the marriage without giving up a penny. He arranges for Ella to spend the night with a man who is not him, and she believes she is playing a game with her husband. Ten months later, in the delivery room, Arthur grabs the first baby and announces, “He isn't my child.” He accuses Ella of cheating, says he is divorcing her, and takes the baby away. A second baby is born, but Arthur already has the evidence he wanted.
Arthur abandons that infant on a hospital bench. Fisher's grandmother hears crying and brings the baby to Fisher. A DNA test confirms the boy is Fisher's son. Fisher has no idea who the mother is—only that he was drugged that night and the woman was blindfolded. He has been searching for her ever since.
Years later, Ella arrives at Fisher's estate with her other son. She interviews for a physical therapist position, but her real reason is to find the child Arthur stole. Her years of investigating point to this property. She impresses Fisher with a neuromuscular test that makes his injured leg respond, and he keeps her on despite Arthur's protests.
Arthur is there with Fiona, his new fiancée, and immediately accuses Ella of coming to ruin their engagement. Ella doesn't flinch. She tells him she has no interest in a scumbag like him and that she is only there for work. Fisher notices something familiar in her voice and in how easily she moves him, but he doesn't yet connect it to the woman from that night.
The real crack comes through food. Ella's young son is hungry, so she makes Brooks family mac and cheese. The dish ends up in front of Finley, the boy Fisher raised, who has severe mutism and food aversion. The staff panics because no one else has been able to get him to eat anything. Ella admits she made it, not knowing the child she just fed is the son she has been hunting for.
The boy she is searching for is under the same roof. The man she works for is the stranger from six years ago. Arthur and Fiona want her gone, but the truth about the twins is already pressing against the surface.
