Skye Kensington is married to Liam Kensington, lord of a city-state after the Great Collapse. In her first life, Liam and his mistress Seraphina Miller murder her. Skye wakes five years earlier and remembers everything.
Before a joint city-state banquet, housekeeper Mary Smith tries to keep Skye plain and unseen, repeating Liam's order to keep a low profile. Skye fires her, dresses extravagantly, and enters the banquet as the lady of the fortress. Nobles gossip. Liam is the lord; Seraphina is his mistress and a city-state-funded prospecting student.
At the auction, the forbidden wasteland goes up for five hundred thousand gold coins. Skye bids five million, then fifty million—half her savings. Liam tries to stop her. Skye ends it with a demand: “I want a divorce.” He refuses to let her use family assets.
Skye seeks Alistair Thorne, heir to the Thorne energy network. She hands over intelligence about contaminated energy cores hidden in the Dock area by the northern wasteland lord. She needs fifty million tonight and promises double in three months. She asks Alistair to ruin Liam's banquet and humiliate Liam and Seraphina. Skye agrees to the plan for free; her goal is revenge, not payment. Alistair calls her Prophet, her encrypted dark-web name, without her saying it.
At the banquet, Seraphina pushes Skye to play the harp. Skye makes a bet with Seraphina: if Skye plays well, Seraphina strips naked and gets out. Skye plays an Old Era piece and stuns the room. She then demands Seraphina keep the bet. Elias Thorne, the Thorne patriarch, labels Seraphina Liam's mistress and rules that mistresses should stay quietly in the shadows, not make a scene. He orders Seraphina out, warning that otherwise he will not trust the Kensington family. Liam tries to protect Seraphina but cannot change the result.
Alistair later confirms the wasteland will be rezoned into an energy core conservation area. He looks forward to her takedown of the Kensingtons. On her way home, Silas Ford—Alistair's former guard, banished for theft—kidnaps her and demands fifty million from Liam. Skye dismisses the ransom: Liam won't pay and does not love her. Silas warns that if Liam doesn't pay, she dies.
