Marcello is the Don of the Valence family. Severe PTSD from a childhood kidnapping leaves him cold and pushes everyone away. Lilian, his wife of six years, can hear his thoughts. At the family banquet, everyone knows she is Marcello's wife, but his assistant Camilla is on his arm again, standing where the Don's wife should be. Camilla apologizes, and the Don chose her to stand beside him.

Marcello's impatience flashes. He accuses Lilian of being twenty minutes late. She has no right to question him. He orders her to a corner or out of his estate. In his mind, he begs her to get angry, to scream that she is his wife. Lilian waits for him to deny it. Instead, Marcello pulls Camilla closer. Lilian removes the diamond ring. It hits the floor. The hall goes silent. "Let's get a divorce."

Marcello's face drains. A family elder rushes forward to smooth things over, blaming the Don's anger on her lateness. Lilian asks why Camilla stands where the Don's wife should be. Camilla's eyes well up. The Valence family has no place for a woman who doesn't know her place. If she wants a divorce, she can get out. His thoughts are the opposite: he begs her not to leave. Lilian has dealt with his two faces for six years and is tired.

Six years earlier, Lilian saved Marcello after he was critically wounded in a gang war. His PTSD made him push everyone away with cruel words, but his thoughts asked not to be left alone. She pitied him, fell in love, and stayed. Everyone saw his improvement; with her, he stayed cold. She treated his thoughts as proof he loved her until Camilla appeared.

Camilla wears a diamond necklace Marcello bought at auction last week. He gives real affection to someone else, and now the place by his side. Even with his thoughts screaming love, Lilian stops lying to herself. She turns to leave. A wine glass shatters. Marcello threatens that if she walks out, Camilla will be in their bed tonight. Lilian recalls the room she decorated, the first night they were husband and wife, and the promise in his mind that only she would ever be in that room. Now he would let another woman in. She doesn’t need it anymore.

The hospital is sending Lilian to London for a placement. She leaves tomorrow. The divorce timing is perfect.
