He Hated Me… Until He Met Our Son

Six years earlier, Clara Hayes took five hundred thousand dollars from Ryan Whitmore's mother and let him believe she had ended their pregnancy. He knelt outside the clinic, slamming his fists against the door and begging her not to be so cruel. She lay on the table and bit her lip until she tasted blood, never making a sound. After that day, he swore he would hate her for the rest of his life. Clara disappeared, but she secretly gave birth to their son Noah and raised him alone. Now Noah is sick and dying, and Clara has burned through every dime to keep him alive. She goes to the college reunion hoping to borrow from old classmates and works nights at a private club, drinking with men until her stomach bleeds. At the reunion, Ryan stands across the room with a cigarette. He tosses his wedding invitation across the table, and it hits her chest and falls into her lap. He tells her not to come, because his wife will be unhappy. Clara leaves early, convinced they will never cross paths again.

A few days later, Vivian Shaw corners Clara at the club. She offers twenty thousand dollars if Clara finishes an entire bottle, then laughs and withdraws the promise, calling it a lesson. Clara smashes the bottle, drags a shard across her own arm, and demands the money. Ryan appears at that moment, pulls Vivian into his arms, and orders Clara to apologize. Clara takes the bank card and turns to leave, but Ryan grabs her wrist, throws her over his shoulder, and carries her to his car. Inside, she sees what is in the drawer: an old lipstick she used, a broken hair tie, and the cheap pink hair clip Ryan once bought her. He kept everything. She tells him she is married and has a child. Ryan does not believe her, so she takes him to the children's hospital. She points through the glass at Noah. Ryan stares at the boy for a long time, then slams his fist into the wall. He does not ask who the father is. He does not recognize his own son.

Sometime later, Vivian visits the hospital. She whispers to Noah that his father abandoned him because his mother is dirty. Clara bursts in, drags Vivian into the hallway, and shoves her against the wall. She warns Vivian that if she does not stop, Clara will attend the wedding and tell Ryan the child she gave birth to is his. Before she can finish, Ryan appears around the corner and sees Clara gripping Vivian's collar.
