The Sea God's curse grows stronger each day. The High Priestess, his vassal, sets the condition: he must marry the eldest daughter of the witch clan and produce an heir carrying both divine blood and the power of prophecy. Aurora is that eldest daughter. Morwen, matriarch of the Witch-Clan, forces her to take her stepsister Celeste's face and sends her to the Sea God under Celeste's name. Morwen's leverage is Aurora's mother's ashes: if the Sea God touches her more than three times, the ashes go to Serporius grain by grain.
At the Sea God's hall, Aurora blows a conch shell. He finds her. He did not expect the eldest daughter of the witch clan to blow it. She rejects his advance. He calls her the first person to dare reject him. Then the curse hits him with pain. Aurora calms him. He recognizes her as the one he has been searching for. He gives her the Sea God's kiss and names her his queen. The wedding ceremony is completed. He leaves for the Witch-Clan Citadel to speak with Morwen.
At the Witch-Clan Citadel, while the Sea God is away, Celeste confronts Aurora. Celeste accuses her of sleeping with the Sea God and letting him touch her more than three times. Celeste orders her back to the filthy basement. The Sea God returns, and Celeste tries to receive him. He rejects her, disappointed and disgusted, and leaves. Celeste goes to Aurora, hits her, and threatens her to win the Sea God back and never tell him the truth. When the Sea God sees Aurora's face, she cannot name who hurt her.
Aurora is pregnant. Morwen and Celeste reveal the plan. Celeste wants the divine child transferred into her. A soundproofing spell is cast so the Sea God will not hear. Morwen declares the mission complete: the child will be taken from Aurora's womb and given to the one it belongs to. Celeste calls her a womb for rent. They reveal Aurora's mother was killed by a soul-devouring hairpin. The memory surfaces: Morwen poisoned her mother. Celeste moves to kill her.
The Sea God senses the woman he named queen is in danger and moves to save her. Celeste's plan: once Aurora is dead, she becomes the Sea God’s only queen, shares his bed, and makes him crave her. The attempt to take the child begins. Aurora begs for her child. The Sea God is coming for her.
