Nora becomes live-in stepmother to mafia don Luca's lonely son Leo. The contract is cold—but Leo's grip on her hand is not.

Nora Bennett's husband throws her out over how much she eats. That night she signs the divorce papers and leaves with a duffel bag and $36. A flyer on a utility pole advertises a live-in stepmother job, room and board included. She follows the address to the estate of Luca Castellano, head of New York's oldest Mafia family.

The butler sets one rule before she enters: the don needs a mother for the child, not a wife. Nora wants the free lodging and no new husband, so she stays. Inside, a half-open door shows a man shot to the floor; the butler treats it as the don's business. At dinner, Luca is an exhausted father trying to get Leo to eat. The boy hides under the table and calls Nora fat and ugly. Nora grabs two action figures and a spoon and feeds "Little Hero" instead, warning that skinny heroes cannot protect anyone. Leo lunges for the spoon. Luca's approval shows.

That night she moves in. The butler bars the third floor with a story about the last woman thrown from a second-story window. Luca lays out the contract: a mother for Leo, separate lives, a prenup, $100,000 a month, and the money stays hers after divorce. She agrees. Three days after signing her divorce papers, she marries again, no ceremony. At dinner after the wedding, Luca slides the Castellano signet ring across the table. She takes it.

Leo appears at her door for a bedtime story and offers to ask his dad for more money. She lets him sleep beside her. At breakfast Luca adds $50,000, then another $50,000 when Leo wraps his hand around her finger. From then on Leo follows her everywhere while Luca disappears for a month into deals, guns, and bloodshed.

A follow-up appointment forces the next step. The butler's rule: Leo cannot leave the house without risking a panic attack. Leo climbs into the car anyway. At the hospital he gives Nora his last candy and promises to eat all his meals so he can grow up and protect her. Nora cries, remembering the accusation that her depression was faked and the nephew she raised who called her fat and ugly. Outside, Luca waits by a black car. The contract is still cold on paper, but Leo has already chosen her.
