Arthur Leo was House Leo's magicless fool. Then he absorbed the Wordless Book, drained a royal tower, and became the Archmage no one saw coming.

Arthur Leo, the eldest son of House Leo's first line, is the family's magicless disgrace. His cousins Carl, Bruce, and Victor make him crawl for cake and throw it in the mud, calling him a squid without a trace of magic. Only his servant Henry cares for him.

Everything changes at a royal gathering. The kingdom's best mages fail to control the Wordless Book, its recoil nearly killing them, and the king orders it destroyed. The book has other plans. It comes to Arthur, says it has been waiting, and burrows into his body. The fog in his head vanishes. He has magic now, more than he can control, and it keeps growing.

At the Ashford Training Enclave, Arthur watches Ron Ashford practice and learns the Ashford family's secret flame spear in a single glance. He casts it stronger than Ron. Ron calls him a thief and attacks. Ron has been hunting Arthur, and Duke William steps in, demanding Arthur be handed over. Arthur copies Duke Lance's high-tier teleportation spell without a gesture and escapes. All that is left behind is the crest of House Leo.

At Count Leo's birthday banquet, his cousins trap him in a tower that repels the weak. It holds tens of thousands of high-tier spells and is a royal treasure. Because Arthur is a squib, the barrier ignores him. The spirit inside attacks, and Arthur absorbs it instead, draining the tower dry and learning every spell inside. The tower collapses. The kingdom's mages find it empty for the first time in two hundred years. The king orders a search for whoever did it before the summit. Aria William, Duke William's daughter and the kingdom's top prodigy, goes to test Arthur herself.
