Alina Smith is the invisible girl at West Valley High. For two years she has liked Alex Benson, the football captain. When she asks him to the summer dance, Alex rejects her in front of everyone. The insult lands hard: "You're nothing but a frumpy dull fat girl." The school turns it into a spectacle. Alina believes no one will ever choose her.
After the rejection, Alina is cornered behind a door. A group threatens to teach her her place and cool her down. Emma Mills, Alex's girlfriend, and her sidekicks Jessica Bingham, Britney Mosley and Ashley Kane are the jealous rivals who keep the pressure on.
Then Brice Jones, a world-famous young star, transfers to West Valley High. He announces to the whole school that the girl he likes is right there. Over the school broadcast, he asks Alina to be his date to the summer dance. Alina assumes it is a prank. Brice finds her anyway and repeats the invitation. To Brice, Alex saying no only means she is free to say yes to him. Before the dance, Brice is called back to the studio to rerecord a song. Word reaches Alina that he is not coming. She goes to the dance without him.
At the summer dance, the bullying escalates. Emma and her sidekicks reveal the outfit Alina wore was their setup, not a gift from Alex. They mock her body, record her, and force her to repeat that she is unwanted. Brice finishes at the studio and rushes to West Valley High. He orders them away from her and gives her a different dress. They dance. He takes her home and kisses her.
At home, Alina's family refuses to believe she was with Brice. Her mother and brother dismiss her as delusional. The next morning, Brice's manager Michael Ward pushes a PR romance with Bella Eighteen to boost his career. Brice turns it down because he is already into someone. He then goes to Alina's house, where her family is trying to take her to a psychiatrist. He arrives and drives Alina to school.
In the car, Alina asks whether any of it is real. Brice insists he finds her attractive as she is. Their intimacy grows. Outside the romance, the pressure keeps building: bullies, jealous rivals, family rejection, fan attacks, and online hate pile up. Brice keeps standing by her. Alina still has to face her deepest insecurity.
Behind Brice's years-long devotion lies a forgotten childhood memory. That memory connects them long before he ever transferred to West Valley High.
