Cole, a disgraced rancher, spent three years helping his cousin Tucker build a ranch after giving up everything. Tucker changed the deal, offered $5,000 instead of the promised $1 million, and cut him loose. Cole took the money because he needed a new start, but he left Tucker with a prediction: without Cole, the place would be dead by Christmas.

Cole leased 400 barren acres from Mabel Holloway, Henry's widow. Tucker tried to outbid him and humiliate him. Cole pointed to forty years of continuous grazing, fox tail, ironweed, and wind off the ridge; the land was waiting. Mabel leased him the west section for $3,000 for one year and gave him Henry's notebook, which contained a plan for the land.

At auction, Tucker bid against Cole on his own cattle. Cole bought forty head at $1,400 each, wiping out his savings. Tucker's best eight were among the herd; four came from a genetic line Tucker gave up on, worth twice what Cole paid. Tucker never knew what he was looking at.

Using Henry's notebook, Cole divided the 400 acres into forty paddocks and moved the herd every few days. A storm caught him. He turned the cows out too soon and did not check the weather; a four-month-old calf died. Cole took the blame. He sold the car whose engine his father had rebuilt with him when he was sixteen to buy better equipment.

Six weeks later, every paddock had backup chargers, backup water, backup everything. Cole would not lose another calf. Tucker mocked the small operation and predicted the cows would not touch the dead grass. Cole chose the weakest cow as the test; she ate, and the rest followed. An older bystander named Cole the best cattleman in the county—better than Tucker's father, better than Tucker. Tucker had his men drive off. Their vehicle crashed through a fence. Cole shot out a tire. Cole dared Tucker to come at him.

The 400 acres still held more than grazing land. The soil carried a secret that could destroy Tucker.
