In the Bellini family, every Principessa receives a gemstone at birth, and at eighteen the Don sets it into an induction crown that carries the power and protection of the Bellini name. A week before Elena and her twin sister Bianca turn eighteen, their brother Marco brings the crowns home. Bianca's crown holds two diamonds. Elena's question—"Why does she have my diamond?"—gets a shrug and a line about Bianca wanting more spark. Marco hands Elena an old crown from the family vault, tarnished and missing half its stones. Their mother treats the induction as too important to ruin over jewelry.
The pattern started long before the crowns. Bianca's room looks like a princess's dream; Elena's looks like a storage closet. Bianca takes Elena's dog. Their mother gives Bianca pretty clothes and leaves Elena in plain ones. At dinner, Elena's place is moved to the end of the table. Their father gives Bianca $30 million, a mansion, company shares, and a Ferrari, then tells Elena she has always been capable and should learn to stand on her own. Their mother takes the bracelet their grandmother left for Elena and gives it to Bianca. Elena had thought the induction would prove she belonged. It only erases her again.
MIT's final admission deadline arrives on her phone. Elena accepts. She will no longer sacrifice herself to remain part of the Bellini family.
Before the induction, Bianca's gown arrives from Milan at a Manhattan showroom. Elena is sent to pick it up, which leaves her no time to get ready. When she returns, black SUVs line the drive for the Morettis. She is told she cannot sit beside Don Bellini looking half dressed, and her place is moved to the end of the table.
That night, the family plans a portrait for noon the next day in the council chamber, with Bianca in her induction gown. Elena's college interview is at noon. Marco says they cannot rearrange Don Bellini's schedule around a college call. Their mother calls the portrait an induction announcement and says Elena hates social events anyway. Bianca promises another portrait later; Elena knows there will not be one. Their father refuses to delay the portrait and tells Elena to make her own choice, as though missing it would be her decision. Elena locks her door, opens the MIT acceptance portal, selects the earliest move-in date, pays the housing deposit from her own competition winnings, and books a one-way ticket to Boston for 9:10 a.m. on the morning of the induction.
The next afternoon, Elena finishes her MIT interview and goes downstairs. The family portrait is already over. Bianca stands at the center in her induction gown with the Bellini crown on her head. No one mentions Elena's absence. The family then settles what the twins receive upon induction: a $30 million trust, the Hudson estate, and 20% of the family holdings go to Bianca. Her mother promises Bianca protection. Marco gives Bianca the key to a custom-made white Ferrari. Their mother asks Elena what she plans to give her sister. Elena asks what she is receiving.
