Jack Holt waits with his old squad for Sam Russo to walk through the door. Twelve years ago in Helmand, Sam saw the IED and shoved them away. Two seconds later they would all be dead. Sam paid for it with his leg, and the PTSD kept him away from everyone ever since. Jack told the men who served beside him then: if Sam ever reaches out, anything at all, call him immediately. Now Sam is late for lunch, and Jack is already planning how to get him a GM job at the auto shop. He never gets the chance. What Jack does not know is that Sam spent his final months battling late-stage cancer, refusing treatment so he would not drag his wife Maria and nine-year-old daughter Sofia down with him. In his hospital bed, Sam makes Sofia promise to keep a secret—even from her mother. Behind a photo in a picture frame at their little produce stand, he has written a phone number. The man who answers will help, no matter what. His name is Jack. Sam sends Sofia out to buy an apple. Then he tells Maria he loves her and jumps.
At Sam's funeral, property manager Derek Malone corners Maria. He tells her the cripple finally checked out and it makes things easier for her to come over to his side. Sofia calls him a bad man for breaking her daddy's picture. Derek backhands the nine-year-old to the ground. After the funeral, Derek does not stop. He corners Maria at the market, smashes their stall, tears down the Russo Produce sign, and makes his terms explicit: get in his bed and make him happy, that is the day he leaves her alone. Sofia remembers her father's promise. She finds the number and calls it. Jack answers. He hears a child crying, begging for money to get a new sign so the bad man will stop picking on her mom. Jack thinks it is a scam and hangs up. She calls again. This time Jack listens. He asks her father's name. She says Sam Russo. The line goes quiet. Then Jack says it—stay right where you are, baby. Daddy is coming. Derek's brother is Connor Malone, the tycoon who owns half of Pittsburgh. Overnight, he tears away every contract Ridgeline Farm Supply has and brings Jack to his knees.
