The Translator on the Throne

Scarlett Vance has spent six years as an admin assistant at Harvingston Construction, earning $42,000 a year while quietly working as the company's French translator for a $300 monthly stipend. She is a rare simultaneous interpreter, fluent in French and German, but no one knows. She has kept it hidden.

New admin director Bennett cancels all unofficial allowances in the department, starting with her translation stipend. His logic is simple: she is an admin assistant, translation is not in her job description, and there has never been a formal work order. Scarlett doesn't fight. She marks three French contract emails as read and closes her inbox. When Leo from the project department comes asking for the translations, she tells him to get a work order first.

The French client Mr. Martin, CEO of MBT Construction Group, arrives at the end of the month for a three-day visit worth $200 million. Bennett asks Scarlett to keep interpreting. She refuses with one line: "My French isn't very good. I'd hate to jeopardize something this important for the group." Outside agencies can't handle construction French, and the one agency that can charges $200,000 for three days. Bennett needs another plan.

He introduces Clara, a recent business school graduate who studied in France for three years. Clara speaks fluent daily French but lacks construction engineering terminology. Bennett presents her as fully prepared. Scarlett is ordered to hand over six years of translation records. She does, but Clara's face grows paler with every page.

At the airport, Mr. Martin steps off the plane and asks in French where Scarlett is. Clara doesn't understand the question. She reads three sentences of the welcome letter, then freezes. She tries a French cheek-kiss greeting, and Martin's face goes dark. Bennett tells Martin's assistant that Scarlett is on vacation. Martin says nothing and gets into the car.

That night, Bennett messages Scarlett that she must attend the next morning's business meeting. She replies with one demand: issue a formal work order. Monday morning, a work order sits on her desk—"assist French interpreter," with Clara still listed as the lead. Bennett warns Scarlett not to mention her past translation work to Martin. She says nothing.

At the company, Martin walks straight past Clara and Bennett, goes to Scarlett, and kisses her on both cheeks. In French, he says she is his most trusted partner in America, that she has received him for six years, and that he was deeply disappointed not to see her at the airport. Scarlett translates none of this to Mr. Whitmore, only that Martin is pleased with the welcome. Martin understands some English and knows she lied, but he smiles.

During the tour, Martin asks a technical question about connection joints and seismic performance. Clara can't answer. The room goes silent. Sophia, Martin's assistant, suggests Scarlett answer. Bennett gives in. Scarlett translates the question.

From that moment, Bennett's position weakens. Scarlett stops hiding. The power plays intensify, and she eventually leaves to build her own translation empire—becoming a $500 million businesswoman five years later.
