Tessa Holland has wanted Jared Crawford since before she fought her way into his university. He is her professor, and her father Connor's best friend. That is the whole problem.
In class, Jared confiscates her vape and treats her like a kid. Then Emma, her best friend, sends a photo and chat messages; Tessa accidentally projects them onto the classroom screen. Abby, a classmate, reads them aloud. The room learns Tessa is in love with her dad's best friend.
Jared clears the room and keeps Tessa behind. She admits, "I'm in love with you, Jared." He calls her a daughter, cites the age gap and his loyalty to Connor, and rules himself out. She leaves. Alone, he admits he is drawn to her as a man but will not cross the line.
Later, in the rain, Peter and Noah—two students from the class—pull Tessa into the back seat of her car and harass her; Peter brings up the classroom photo. Jared arrives, breaks the window, pulls Peter out, and punches Noah down. Noah invokes his family's funding of half the campus. Jared calls the chancellor to expel them, strip their credits, and revoke their degrees, then reveals the Crawford name and his position as the university's largest shareholder. He fires a gun near Peter, then at the sky; the next target will be neither floor nor sky.
Jared drives Tessa home. She changes in his car to test him; when they arrive, he orders her out. Outside her house, she points to his physical reaction. He calls it biology, not love or affection. She decides to force him out of hiding.
A week later, at Connor's wilderness boot camp, Tessa fakes an ankle injury so Jared takes her away from Connor. By the water, she jumps into the river. Jared pulls her out and performs CPR. She opens her eyes, kisses him, and later calls it her first kiss. Jared calls it CPR and not a kiss.
That night, Emma asks Tessa for details, and Tessa confirms the kiss. Jared overhears and retreats to his tent. Tessa follows, walks in, and confronts him about what she heard. The secret now has a witness, and Jared's restraint is cracking.
