Ethan North comes home to New York with a carbon-alloy prosthetic below his right knee, a Silver Star, a Purple Heart, and three Bronze Stars with valor. His ex-girlfriend's message is waiting—she wants him home to marry her. He does not know she has already married Todd, a director at the Horton Group. At the VA, staff find he skipped the VIP exit and took the subway.

On the train, Marge Parker—Todd's mother—demands his priority seat. Ethan explains he just had surgery. A bystander films; Marge plays to the camera, tears up his disability certificate, smashes his phone, and stages a heart attack. She offers a transit officer a cushy job through her son. The officer swings at Ethan. Ethan puts him down.

Eleanor Horton spots the livestream and points it out to her grandmother. Ava Horton recognizes the man on screen—the one who pulled her out of a firefight a month ago—and orders him found within half an hour, declaring him under the Horton empire's protection. At the VA, Daniel Reed is watching the same stream. He orders the channel taken down and the footage sent to the police. The platform bans it for "sensitive military information."

The crowd has already turned. They take out his prosthetic leg and beat him. The train makes an emergency stop.

After the subway, Ethan comes home to a father beaten for exposing shoddy construction materials and a mother hospitalized in shock.
