Elio Collins is an Omega disguised as a Beta at Fenris University, where Omega students aren't admitted, chasing his dream of becoming a director. He hates Alphas—especially S-Rank Alpha Karl Blackwood, the football captain almost everyone on campus is obsessed with.
When some Alphas lock Elio in the training area, his heat hits and his suppressor cloth fails. Karl finds him. Elio realizes Karl is the only one who knows his secret, and if he walks out with his scent unmasked, the whole school will know. He asks Karl to help him. Karl refuses—he doesn't do guys—then changes his mind. "Maybe trying a guy wouldn't be so bad after all."
Afterward, Elio swears to the moon goddess that he'll never reveal what happened between them, and if he does, his wolf and he will be cursed never to see each other again. Karl is offended that Elio wants nothing to do with him. He agrees to keep the secret—but in exchange, Elio becomes his toy: Karl calls, Elio comes.
Adler, Elio's wolf, warns the mark is temporary and will fade, but until it does, Karl's scent on him is dangerous. Elio covers the mark with a bandaid and buys Karl's pheromone perfume to mask the scent. Adler felt a strange pull when Karl marked Elio, like something familiar; Elio dismisses it as the mark's effect. Elio's crush, Julian Sinclair, seems like a gentleman—nothing like the arrogant Alphas Elio despises. After Julian leaves Elio, he drops the act: he's only playing nice to stay ahead of Karl.
Karl confides in Kane, a three-headed wolf he consults, that he can't get hard since marking Elio. Kane suggests the reason isn't physical—Karl has fallen for the Omega. Karl denies it, tries to prove it with other people, and fails. He admits to himself that he has fallen for Elio.
Karl seeks Elio out at the drama club and finds him talking about Julian. Karl smashes his phone. Elio, knowing Karl holds his secret, holds back his anger and leaves. Karl is left wondering why Elio hates being around him so much.
