At Nova Sterling's engagement party, her fiancé Bryce ends the engagement in public, and her sister Chloe chooses him. Her adoptive parents demand she bless the couple in public. Nova refuses, invokes a federal emergency mission, and calls an extraction when security moves to keep her in the hotel. The family still sees an adopted daughter living off charity. Nova leads Aegis, a defense project worth billions.

At the lab, the Aegis core overheats and containment is ninety seconds from failing. Nova traces the heat back to pump three and orders it down despite the risk. The core stabilizes. General Knight, Roman Knight's grandfather, then confirms Aegis was sabotaged, her identity is exposed, and a mole is selling the project. His solution is a new identity through marriage to his grandson, Roman Knight. Nova agrees with one condition: "If it protects Aegis, I agree."

Roman, the playboy CEO of Knight Industries, first hears the match described as a poor one—no degree, no job, no money—and decides to see for himself. At a martial arts session involving the Cross family, Serena Cross and her fighter Kovacs mock Nova. A match is set. Nova drops Kovacs, a former Navy SEAL, in one move; when he pulls a knife, she leaves him unable to rise. Winston Cross, Serena's grandfather and a martial arts legend, recognizes her technique and orders Serena to apologize. Roman accepts the engagement for now; Nova tolerates him only for Aegis.

A few days later, Roman's younger brother Leo Knight is cornered at a nightclub. Nova goes to bring him home, but when the group turns on her, Serena Cross steps in and handles them. Nova does not fight. Afterward, Nova recalls that Serena’s grandfather wanted Serena to become her apprentice; she had not wanted to agree, but since Serena just helped her, she accepts. Her own master allows it with one restriction: Serena cannot learn pressure point strikes before she turns thirty.

Roman's investigation starts, but his mother arrives first. Eleanor Knight offers Nova five million to leave Roman, then attacks without warning; Nova dodges on instinct. Eleanor turns the announcement party into a test: survive and stay, or leave New York forever. Nova takes out the perimeter alone and faces Eleanor, a national champion. After twenty minutes, Nova catches her with one hand. The move is Thor's technique. Eleanor recognizes the token and learns Nova is his last disciple—and that he is alive. Eleanor declares Nova a member of the Knight family. Roman and Nova agree to a six-month contract, and the next day Roman gives her access to his lab.

Roman keeps digging. Nova's encrypted call uses a deep-cover intelligence protocol; her six years in Switzerland connect to a school that burned down five years ago, every record destroyed. He confronts her. If she told him the truth, he would not let her go. The question is whether someone hid her or she hid herself. The first answer makes her his enemy; the second makes her like him. He stops digging.

At Columbia, Professor Higginsc tries to humiliate Nova in class, calling her the jilted socialite and a Stirling reject who does not deserve a seat there. The choice is simple: solve it, or leave the classroom. She solves it with a method from a 1968 Soviet journal and walks out. Later, her classmate Madison Peale and her boyfriend Bradford Hunt mock Nova in the rain. Roman's car arrives, Roman inside. His warning to Bradford is blunt—his father's company can disappear from the NYSE before opening. Then he takes Nova away. The mole remains unfound. The Sterling family remains in play. The Cross family remains a testing ground. Nova's revenge has only started.
