Erling's first hunt happens at his father's side. Hagan teaches him to breathe, tells him to wait for the glow to dim, then loose. The stag falls, and Hagan announces in front of everyone that Erling will become a legendary hunter. That pride doesn't last. The stag's mate returns for revenge, and Erling vanishes in the attack.

The loss isn't an accident. Morgun Ash had already complained to Gunnar at the feast that they scrub floors and cook food while the glory goes to others. The attack gives him a chance. He hides the wounded Erling and tells Gunnar to claim his father is dead. Hagan, carrying guilt, adopts Gunnar. The real Erling is taken away, renamed Viggo, and forced to call Morgun father.

Eight years pass. Viggo's wages go to Morgun, who calls him a failure. When Viggo says he wants to enter the Hunter Trials, Morgun demands eighteen years of repayment first. Viggo goes anyway.

Gunnar already starts trouble at the trials. Hagan gives Viggo one chance. Then the hunt itself changes everything. Viggo kills the boar with the Valthorn cut. Hagan recognizes the move and privately wonders how a shipyard boy knows it. He doesn't ask. Sigrid tells Viggo she has watched every trial since childhood and has never seen anyone do what he just did. Viggo only says, "My body just knew," like he was born for it.

Gunnar is named lead hunter; Viggo gets support hunter. Gunnar calls him a stray dog and forces him to stay under his boot. Thora arrives and believes Gunnar's claim that Viggo attacked him. She threatens to throw Viggo from the cliffs if he comes near her family again. After it all, Hagan finds Viggo bleeding and orders him to sit. Steady now.

Viggo has one goal: survive these people, become a hunter, get free. He doesn't know he is Erling. The father who has been searching for eight years is standing right in front of him.

Dramaglance Notes
Morgun Ash's plan starts at that feast. He tells Gunnar they scrub floors and cook food while the glory goes to someone else. Then the beast attacks, Erling is gone, Gunnar becomes Hagan's son, and the real Erling gets renamed Viggo and worked like a thrall. The trials make it sharper. Viggo drops the boar with the Valthorn cut. Hagan wonders how a shipyard boy knows that move, but he doesn't ask. Sigrid says no one has ever done that. Viggo says his body just knew. Then Gunnar takes lead hunter while Viggo gets support. The beating and the threats come fast. Hagan still sits him down after, sees the blood, and tells him steady. That's the pull. The real son is right there, and the man searching for Erling doesn't see him.
Character Dynamics
Viggo is Erling, taken by Morgun Ash after the attack, renamed, and raised as a thrall. Morgun takes his wages and calls him a failure, but Viggo carries a hunting instinct he can't explain. Gunnar is Morgun's own son, planted as Hagan's heir and raised to expect the great hunt. Thora is Hagan's wife, fiercely protective of Gunnar and hostile toward Viggo. Hagan Ualthorn lost Erling in the raid, adopted Gunnar out of guilt, and has never stopped searching for his real son. The household doesn't recognize the missing boy, so every trial scene collides the life Viggo was forced into with the family he should have had.
