Estella spends ten years married to Conrad, a marriage she discovers is a lie on the night of their tenth anniversary feast. Conrad hands her an annulment agreement and tells her to get out. When she goes to her mother Brenda, Brenda calls her a placeholder and a servant, not a wife. Estella leaves with nothing.
Chloe offers money and a place to stay. Estella refuses the money and shows her what she has: letters from the royal head chef, an herbal remedy manual, and a philosophy recommendation from the Royal Academy. Chloe sees the skills and pushes her toward a steward position at Winters Castle.
At the castle, Lady Beatrice Winters gives Estella one hour to make her son Julian eat willingly. Julian has not spoken in six months and refuses meals. Estella shapes food into stars and rabbits, talks to him about the shy rabbits, and he eats. She is hired with a signing bonus and a permanent appointment.
When Estella returns to sign the annulment documents, Conrad and Jana mock her for becoming a servant. Estella refuses to leave with nothing. She presents the betrothal contract and a love letter from Conrad to Jana. The compensation for adultery would ruin Conrad's family. She says, "I am negotiating." Conrad agrees to give her abandoned lands and dilapidated manors.
Jana escalates. At the Winters charity feast, she arranges for Ashley Fletcher to frame Estella for damaging a valuable necklace. The accusation falls apart when Julian speaks for the first time, and a guard confirms Ashley unhooked the necklace herself. Ashley admits Jana told her to do it. Jana is taken away.
Estella is no longer the woman with nothing. She has a position at Winters Castle, protection from the family, and the skills to fight back. She faces whatever comes next on her own terms.
