Elijah Baran is a genie in a magic lamp who can grant three wishes. In 1966, a young Steven Parrish finds the lamp while fishing in Maryland and wishes for wealth. In 2026, Steven is a dying billionaire. He summons Elijah again and uses his final wish to free him, on one condition: Elijah must marry Steven's granddaughter, Christine, for five years. Elijah becomes human and marries her. Steven dies. His will requires Christine to marry Elijah to inherit Parrish Enterprises; otherwise the company goes to shareholders. Christine agrees but refuses Elijah as a husband, keeping their marriage secret at work.
Elijah works as Christine's assistant and husband, but she ignores and belittles him. She needs the Hiller contract to save the company. Elijah secretly cures Adrian Hiller's late-stage lung cancer and asks that the contract go to Christine. Adrian agrees, and Hiller Group gives Christine the contract plus an investment. Christine credits Tony Roth, her ex-boyfriend, for the help.
Tony returns. Christine’s friends invite him to her early birthday party. Tony gives her gifts and puts a necklace on her. Elijah objects to Tony putting the necklace on Christine.
At home, Christine ignores the blue roses Elijah grew for her and the dinner he made. In private, she calls out Tony’s name. Elijah confronts her about it. She accuses him of staying only for money and needing a real man, not a servant. Elijah points to his promise to her grandfather. She urges him to wait a few more days until her birthday, when he will be free.
Later, in a hotel room, Tony tries to assault Christine. Elijah punches him. Christine dismisses the assault as nothing and calls Elijah paranoid. She calls the marriage forced. Elijah asks if she loves Tony; she does not answer.
Elijah realizes Christine will never truly love him. He says, "I see then let's get a divorce." The five-year contract is almost over. Christine still does not know Elijah is the one who secured the Hiller deal and built her success. She believes Tony did it.
