Six years ago, Danica Shaw is ambushed on her way home. A man who knows her family's reputation drugs her. She begs him to stop. Bryan, the dragon prince, is the one who saves her. The drug drives them together. Word arrives that a rebellion has broken out in the Red Keep. His mother summons him back at once. He arranges for someone to escort Danica back to her territory, with orders not to disturb her. Then he is gone.
Danica gives birth to twins, Mark and Ruby. Her family casts her out as a disgrace. For six years, she raises them alone, with only her mother Haley slipping her smoked meat and wheat cakes. Her father Greg never speaks of it, but Haley says he loses sleep every night.
Bryan has spent those same six years searching. He sends dragon riders across the seven kingdoms. He tells his mother he will never marry if he cannot find the woman from that night. Ella, the Queen Mother, has run out of patience. She orders a birthday banquet and commands every unmarried noble woman to attend. The celebration is also a bride selection.
Before the banquet, Mark and Ruby wander into the Shaw family council hall. Rhys Shaw, the elder, orders them whipped. Danica begs to take the punishment in their place. The finger clamps come out. Jerry Cooper, the royal steward, arrives mid-punishment with Ella's decree. Three days. No absences. Danica, covered in scars, agrees to go so her parents will not be punished.
At the banquet, the other noble women whisper about her mixed-blood children and call her a disgrace. Lena warns Danica to stay away from her. Ella spots her in the crowd and demands she be dragged into the hall and whipped. Then she summons Greg. If he wants to save the Shaw family, he must kill his own daughter. Greg refuses. He offers his own life instead.
Bryan enters the hall late. He catches a scent he has remembered for six years. It is her. Ella orders the guards to execute Danica at once. Bryan steps in front of her. Anyone who wants to kill her must go through him first. She is his one and only wife. He will not marry anyone else.
