Seraphina, a succubus on her ninety-ninth mission, takes over the body of the princess of Santonia after the princess's suicide attempt. The mission is a suicide run: seduce the Dragon King or turn to ash, and she still needs the mystery man who saved her life.

Her family forces her into the Dragon King's bride selection to spare Vivian, the fake sister who stole her life. At the selection, Dragon King Xavier offers the chosen girl a way out: find a volunteer and he will spare her. Seraphina volunteers as the princess of Santonia.

At the lair she bets on who will tap out first, finds his racing heart, and calls him lonely. He stops because she does not smell human. She explains the smell: years of stable work and hounds, and a palace that treats her worse than a maid. Xavier orders her to wash first, then meet him in the vault, because he will not have his bride looking like a peasant. In the vault, she sees his hoard.

Xavier drops her at the palace for Vivian's birthday, where Vivian accuses her of stealing jewels and the family drags her to the dungeon. Xavier appears and threatens them for caging his bride. The family backtracks and offers the royal scepter. Then Vivian produces the dead princess’s diary, full of lines calling the Dragon a monster and saying she would rather die than let him touch her.

Xavier takes the diary as Seraphina's true feelings and turns on her, done with the act. Seraphina recognizes the diary as the dead princess's, but Xavier is not listening. He must find true love before the full moon, or the curse will kill him.
