After the Evernight falls, monsters hunt in the dark. Humans survive near Wardfires fueled by Dreadstones, and outposts charge travelers for shelter. Cole Hargrove is the legitimate eldest son of the Northreach Hargroves, framed as a bastard by his brother Derek's faction and exiled to Outpost 37 with three Dreadstones, his maid Mandy, and a wardfire dying in three days.

Cole wakes with past-life memories and keeps his rebirth secret. A gray-coated stranger pays one Dreadstone for a night's shelter, giving Cole his first usable Dreadstone. The Evernight Sovereign interface activates: he can spend Dreadstones to construct, upgrade, and reinforce structures within his domain. The stranger leaves a survey map of monsters in the region, updating in real time and showing every Wardfire's status. He promises to pass through again in three months and might give real help if Cole is still alive. He never gives his name.

At dawn, a dead Howler is caught in a bear trap outside. Cole waits for the stranger to leave before cutting it open for the Dreadstone. Mandy identifies the Howler as a common low-level monster whose Dreadstone grows in the back of its skull. Cole sends Mandy to twist dry grass into rope and goes out to scout. Food and fresh water are running out.

He finds a level two Wardfire outpost with a farm and four people. Walter Voss, supervisor of Outpost 17 for Ridge Point Voss, comes to Outpost 37. Walter's man calls Cole the bastard son of the Northreach Hargroves. Walter apologizes for his man and leaves. That night, Walter sends food and water back with a messenger, claiming it was borrowed before Outpost 37 was abandoned. Cole sees it as an investment: Walter thinks he might survive, so he is placing a bet.

With the five Dreadstones Walter sent, Cole now has six. He builds four bear traps, including the original one, and is completely broke. A wall and an arrow tower are out of reach. Now all he has to do is wait for the Evernight and get to work.
