Mia takes Samuel's one-year contract to care for Bianca. Samuel abandons the deal and proposes only after Bianca finally speaks.
Mia has superhuman strength and a habit of stepping in for other people. After high school she spends eight years painting construction sites and loses 27 jobs. When a boss gets handsy, she uses her fists. The fallout costs her three months of wages and medical bills. Her parents' bakery shuts down. Her fiancé Leo ends their engagement, calling her broke, uneducated, and a troublemaker. Mia promises to buy the bakery back, every cent.
While Mia is working in Samuel's house, Isabella Monroe, Samuel's prospective wife, bullies six-year-old Bianca—tearing a picture of Bianca's dead mother and trying to force a necklace on her. Mia steps in and hits Isabella. Samuel, Bianca's father and a crime boss, arrives. His question—"Who gave you permission to touch my daughter?"—results in the Monroe family being banned from Meretti territory and Mia being fired.
Mia quits on the spot. Samuel offers her a job instead: be his wife for one year, five million dollars. Mia asks her parents first. The advance clears the debt and buys the bakery back. She is a nominal wife, a stepmother on payroll, there to care for Bianca and get her to speak. The remaining four million is hers to walk away with. In name only.
At the manor, Samuel introduces Mia as his wife and the lady of the house. Bianca is mute and withdrawn. Mia promises to fight for her and curse people out for her; she will smash anyone who messes with Bianca, even Bianca's father. Bianca does not pull away from a hug.
Samuel leaves for Chicago and gives Mia authority: while he is gone, her word is his law. Elena, who has cared for Bianca for five years, sees the new wife as a threat to her place in the house. With Samuel gone, Elena drops the act. She insults Bianca and Mia, calls Mia uneducated trash, and lays hands on Bianca. Mia throws her out. Elena promises to tell Samuel everything and frames Mia as jealous and violent.
When Samuel returns, Elena's story is that Mia went insane and smashed her through glass. Mia's side is that Elena was abusing Bianca. Samuel faces two stories. Over the year, Mia's care reaches Bianca, and Samuel's feelings shift. Leo, her ex-fiancé, resorts to violence. Bianca's silence breaks. Samuel walks away from the one-year deal, proposes for real, and the two choose each other.
