The Day I Stopped Begging, I Became Free

Vera has just buried her child when a $52 transfer lands from her husband Killian. The note calls it compensation for Vanessa forgetting Sarah's treatment fee. Killian's follow-up calls demand she clarify, and he rushes to the hospital when Vera ignores him. A nurse tells him Sarah is gone.

Five days earlier, Sarah's condition turns critical. Vera, pregnant and alone in the hospital corridor, calls Killian and begs for three hundred thousand. He sends her to Vanessa. Vanessa demands proof, then says she forgot. The funds never come, and Sarah misses her only matching donor. When the truth comes out, Killian says the pause was his order and has nothing to do with Vanessa. That is the moment Vera asks for a divorce. "Let's get a divorce."

The next day, Killian doesn't show at city hall. His noon reply is busy shopping with Vanessa; if she wants a divorce, take it to court. Vera sells her last ring to pay for medicine and sees Vanessa's post of luxury bags.

Vanessa comes to the hospital to reassess the expense. Killian appears and defends her. After Sarah's emergency surgery, Vera goes downstairs and sees the two sharing desserts. Vanessa calls it a work meal. Vera's reply: not every expense needs approval. That night, fireworks celebrate Vanessa. She wears a diamond necklace Vera once admired. Killian calls, telling Vera not to unlike the post and to praise Vanessa.

Vera's comment is sharp: Vanessa gets to wear what Mrs. can't. Killian calls again, furious she humiliated Vanessa. The call cuts off when Sarah's monitor blares. Sarah has pulled out her oxygen tube, saying she overheard the call from Killian and doesn't want to drag Vera down. Vera calls Killian for help; Vanessa answers, demanding she kneel and apologize. The doctor pronounces Sarah dead. As Vera heads toward the restroom, a shoulder slams into her and pain tears through her lower abdomen.
