Jax Cole, a delivery guy who pays his younger sister's tuition, interrupts the kidnapping of Aria Vance, CEO of Vance Group, during a rainstorm. The thugs beat him down. Lightning strikes him on the ground and awakens electrokinesis. He takes down the thugs and gets Aria out. Aria was drugged, and they spend the night together in the car. The next morning she gives him her card and says she owes him.
Later, Jax discovers his powers also include x-ray vision, time slow, and short-range teleportation. He goes back to deliveries. Aria runs a background check: his mother died young, his only family is a sister in school, no suspicious record. He never called after she gave him her card. Roxy, Aria's best friend, doubts the rescue was real and doubts Jax's qualifications. Aria wants to test him.
Aria offers him a bodyguard job. He calls money talk tacky and says he just likes helping. She offers a million dollars; he regrets playing it cool. To test him, Aria sets a fight with her retired special ops bodyguard. Ten rounds means ten grand a month, twenty means thirty, beating him means a hundred grand a month. Jax uses a small zap, slows time, and wins. A 1.2 million transfer to Aria's company account covers his salary for the year. He becomes her personal bodyguard.
The terms: pickups, drop-offs, staying with her every step. He lives far, so Aria offers him a room at her place. He accepts. He sends money to his sister; she teases him about being scrawny. The next morning he arrives early and accidentally uses x-ray vision, getting a nosebleed. Aria's eight o'clock meeting was pushed back by an emergency and she forgot to tell him.
In the car, a time bomb activates when they sit down. One minute. Jax runs through his powers—lightning, x-ray, time slow—none help. He remembers teleporting a short distance during the fight with the thugs. Aria asks for a kiss before they die. He has her keep her eyes closed and promises they will make it.
Victor Doyle reports to Damien Vance, Aria's cousin: Aria was rescued, the mission failed. Damien wanted a tape to force Aria out of power; killing her is easier now. He orders it kept clean. Victor is Damien's right hand and tied to that side of the conflict.
