Olivia Moore has loved Jacob Cole since before their parents married. After Jacob's mother died, his father married Olivia's mother, and Jacob became Olivia's stepbrother. He grew cold and distant, racing motorcycles and illegal street races while Olivia stayed the straight-A golden girl.
On the second anniversary of his mother's death, Jacob goes out for a race in bad weather. Olivia comes to stop him. He brushes her off, then agrees to leave with her only if she rides with him. He forfeits the race and lets another rider pick any bike except his, because he has to give his stepsister a ride home. Olivia is confused: he is mean, yet he gives up the race when she asks. She feels a pull she knows is wrong.
At home, Jacob refuses dinner with the family. Pretending they are a family feels to him like choosing them over his mother. Olivia remembers they used to be close, when he promised he would never let her fall. That changed the day her mom married his dad. His father beats him for being out all night and dragging Olivia into his reckless behavior. Jacob confronts Olivia about the beating and calls her step sister. She did not tell, and she stops his father from hitting him again. Jacob reminds his father what day it is, the second anniversary of his mother's death, and says he will never forget her even if everyone else has. Olivia sees his anger as loneliness. She knows he is good, loyal, kind.
After the beating, Olivia brings medicine to Jacob's room. She sees a tattoo of her name on his lower belly. He asks whether she saw anything. She denies seeing anything and came only to treat his wounds. He orders her out, but she refuses until she finishes. While she treats a cut, he becomes aroused and calls himself wrong for reacting to his stepsister. Olivia's mom nearly walks in asking where Olivia is; Jacob covers for her. Olivia knows if her mom sees her kneeling between her stepbrother's legs, she will lose her mind. After the mom leaves, Olivia finds his cigarettes and puts them down her chest, daring him. He warns her not to tempt him; he has plenty more bad habits and offers her a try.
A call with friends turns to a weekend movie night and Lily, Jacob's girlfriend, who wants him. He wants Olivia far away and makes clear Lily should dress slutty if she wants him. Olivia concludes she will never be that kind of girl. She decides to change for homecoming.
Before homecoming, Olivia changes her style, hoping to make Jacob jealous. Jacob notices and questions her. She claims a date. He presses about a lipstick mark and her dating life; she throws his sixteen girlfriends back at him. He offers her a ride after her date fails to pick her up, though he would rather race than attend. At the party, classmates photograph Olivia and make her uncomfortable. Lily and other girls corner her, expose the tissues she used to stuff her bra, mock her body, and film the humiliation. They warn her to stay away from Jacob. Olivia insists Jacob is only her stepbrother and has never looked at her as anything more. Then Jacob arrives, crushes the camera's memory card, and says: “who gave you the right to fuck with my girl.”
