The Impoverished Student I Sponsored for Ten Years Set His Sights on My Fiancée

Ethan and Sarah have been together for ten years and are on the eve of their wedding. Leo, a student from the slums Ethan has sponsored for a decade, posts from the new home: he has moved in, the bed Sarah prepared is huge and comfortable, and in the photo Sarah is cuddled against him. Ethan's wedding ring is on Leo's finger. Leo comments that being the first guy in that bed has him on cloud nine. Ethan replies with a question mark; Sarah calls, frames his reaction as overreacting, and hangs up while still flirting with Leo. Ethan decides he will not go through with the wedding.

Sarah returns after seeing Leo and finds Ethan eating alone. She mocks him for not waiting up like a fool until midnight, and he resolves to stop waiting. She does not notice his coldness and asks him to apologize to Leo. Ethan has supported Leo financially for ten years and treated him like a brother, but after Leo met Sarah through him, Leo stopped showing respect and kept finding excuses to be near her.

Later that night, Sarah slams a kitchen cabinet door against Ethan's hand. Blood streams from the cut. She cannot find the first aid kit because she took it to Leo a month earlier when he scraped himself playing basketball, cutting their date short. She offers to drive Ethan to the hospital, but Leo calls, and she turns the car around. She pulls up at the new home, where she has let Leo move in, and leaves Ethan in the car to fetch the kit. Ethan loses consciousness, wakes at midnight with his wound scabbed and half his arm numb, and walks home alone.

At home, a friend sends Ethan a video of Sarah with Leo at a party. When another woman brushes against Leo, Sarah pushes her away and pulls Leo closer. Ethan remembers a party where Sarah used him as a waiter, and her best friend Jessica came onto him, poured red wine over his head, then accused him of harassing her. Sarah had him arrested without hearing him out; he was held for 24 hours. While he was locked up, Sarah played video games with Leo. Sarah later dismissed the incident as Jessica joking. Ethan sees that Sarah will defend Leo but not him.

He turns off his phone and packs Sarah's belongings into boxes. The apartment becomes emptier and cleaner. Their ten-year relationship is over. The engagement is cancelled. Leo is removed from the wedding house, and Ethan asks for the rent Leo owes. Sarah's regret follows her, and Leo's family turns her life into a drawn-out mess. Sam brings Ethan back in touch with Chloe, a former classmate. Work and daily life put them side by side, and something between them starts to take hold. Ethan moves into a different chapter.
