Lyra Solis grew up in an orphanage, saved Rowan and Kaleb as children, and Queen Gabriela raised her in the palace with the promise that she would marry the two princes. At the ceremony on her twentieth birthday, Rowan and Kaleb walk past Lyra to Blair, her maid. The sacred tree binds Lyra to the princes anyway.
The princes call the bond false and demand it be broken. They also agree to hand Lyra over to Greg and Lucas, two monstrous mates whose last mates died, in exchange for keeping Blair. Queen Gabriela refuses the trade; the sacred tree's decree cannot be traded away. Lyra accepts the dragon clan's marriage proposal.
The princes use compulsion on Lyra, then publicly reject her as their mate and choose Blair under clause seven. Lyra tears the mate bond out by force, risking her soul. Queen Gabriela says she is ashamed of her sons.
Later, in the blight marsh, Greg and Lucas trap Lyra and Blair and force the princes to choose one. They choose Blair. Lyra offers a spell that could freeze the marsh and save both if they save her first; they refuse. Queen Gabriela brings Lyra back.
Dragon King Valerius sends betrothal gifts and his heart scale. Lyra’s marriage to him is set. The princes expect her to crawl back; instead she is becoming the Dragon Queen.
