Plotting revenge was the crime. The dean ordered him to summon his guardian on the spot or forget about leaving.

That order made his hair stand on end. His guardians were not ordinary people. They were all on Norrberg's most wanted list, and Dante had spent more than a dozen years living quietly so he would never cause them trouble. He tried to stall. He offered an apology letter or detention instead. Then Antonio Rossi, Giovanni's father, slapped him to the ground and demanded the guardians come apologize in person. The dean assured Antonio the school would handle it with no leniency, then turned on Dante and ordered him to call his sisters.

Antonio handed over five hundred thousand dollars as a donation to the school. The dean's eyes lit up. Now Dante either called his sisters to come pay and apologize, or she went straight to the police. The word police hit him like a needle. He could not drag his sisters into this.

"Are you sure you want to meet my guardians, Ms. Greco?"

He picked Sophia, his eldest sister and the Donna of the family. Of all of them, she was the gentlest, the one who could pass for an ordinary person. The call connected the instant he dialed.
