Grace Bennett, a single mother from Texas now working in a California factory and caring for her daughter Lily, buys fencing gloves for Lily's birthday. At a factory inspection, owner Ethan Callahan—CEO of Callahan Group, a wheelchair user after an Afghanistan injury—struggles to get into his chair; Grace helps him.

When Grace returns to the Sullivan home, she finds Lily kneeling outside in the rain. Derek Sullivan, Lily's father, and his mother Diane accuse Lily of stealing a pair of gloves. Lily insists she did not; Grace believes her. Diane calls Grace a trap and Lily a thief; Lily asks if she is a burden; her fever worsens. Grace tries to take her to the hospital; Diane refuses the cost and calls Lily a thief; Grace flips the dining table.

Derek confronts Grace. She recounts dropping out of design school, working double factory shifts for his tuition and the family's expenses, and being introduced as the nanny. He calls her a factory worker and mocks her drawings; she calls him a leech. Derek hits and chokes her. Lily pleads; Derek insults Lily. Kyle, the child whose gloves were at issue, stomps the fencing gloves. Grace declares the relationship over and leaves with Lily.

In front of the crying mother and daughter in the rain, Ethan appears in his wheelchair and proposes. He offers a shield for Grace and Lily, identifies himself as CEO of Callahan Group, and frames the proposal as needing a wife and repaying her help. Grace accepts after weighing hunger, eviction, and Derek's treatment against Ethan's bad legs. They marry; Ethan arranges Lily's place at Maple Field Independent School and fencing gear at home.

At Maple Field, Ethan introduces Lily as his daughter and donates a fencing center so she gets training. Derek's family arrives hoping for Kyle's admission. Diane and Derek corner Grace; Derek orders her home and dangles marriage; Grace refuses. Kyle pushes Lily; Derek prepares to whip Grace; Diane says Grace and Lily will learn their place. Ethan arrives and orders Derek off his wife and daughter: “Get your filthy hands off my wife and daughter.”

The marriage begins as a shield, but Ethan's open pride in Grace and Lily—and his place beside them at Maple Field—starts to change what Grace thought she could have.
