Oliver is eighteen, a wide receiver on the football team. He idolizes Carlos, the nineteen-year-old quarterback who keeps his helmet on and leaves practice right after training. At home, Oliver lives with his stepbrother, also named Carlos. That Carlos is the person he hates most. He does not know the two are one and the same.
His love life falls apart. Gale confronts him over a girl. Debbie, who was supposed to watch Oliver practice, asks Carlos out instead. Oliver blames his stepbrother and sets a fake boyfriend claim in motion, letting Debbie believe Carlos is gay and into him. The move is meant to humiliate. It brings the two of them closer instead.
A blackout in the school locker room leaves Oliver alone in the dark. His heart beats fast. When the lights come back, he cannot stop thinking about the two Carloses, the tangle tightening in his chest.
At the victory party at the Hunters' lake house, Gale gets drunk and tries to fight Oliver. Carlos steps in. Oliver decides to hit back. By the pool, he tries to push Carlos into the water. Carlos pulls him in instead, and Oliver's pants slip off. Carlos lifts him, carries him away, and pins him down. "Look at me. I want you to remember who made you like this." Oliver struggles at first, but Carlos doesn't let go.
The next day, Gregory asks Oliver where the captain went. Someone saw Carlos enter that room. Oliver finally understands the stepbrother and the captain are one person. He wants to move out. His mother and Carlos's father come home early and decide the two should share a room instead.
Sharing a room only sharpens the tension. Carlos walks around undressed after a shower. At a party, Oliver meets Casey and feels nothing. Carlos's face keeps flashing in his mind. Carlos shows up and drags him home. Oliver pretends to sleep, but Carlos leaves water and a note.
The pretending gets harder. Carlos's hidden feelings begin to surface, and Oliver finds himself falling for the man he swore to hate. In the end, they stop pretending and stand together, no longer hiding.
