Rejected By The Son, I Chose His Dad

Elinor walks the sacred path alone. No groom waits at the altar. Her friend Fiona, pale as death, grabs her arm: Audric fled an hour ago with a singer from the North Tower Tavern. The church buzzes with humiliation. Audric's grandmother Cecily stands and declares the covenant broken, but Elinor doesn't weep. She raises her hand, passes her finger over every man in the room, and points to the one sitting alone in the front row—Audric's father, Lord Reynald Montaigne, the most powerful man in the land. "I choose him." The church falls dead silent. When Cecily protests, Elinor answers: the covenant requires a Castellan daughter to marry a Montaigne son. It does not specify which one. Reynald is unmarried. He is an option.
On their wedding night, Reynald announces he will sleep in the scriptorium. Elinor blocks the door. "Your son already ran from the altar. If you leave now, Montaigne vows become a joke." He stares at her, the mockery fading from his face. He stays. The next morning, he finds her fully dressed and asks why she chose him. Her answer is brutally honest: "By marrying you, I became the lady of this castle." She wanted power. He grants it, then hands her a sharper blade—when Audric returns, she is to teach him his place. "Break him if you have to."
Before Audric reappears, Elinor has to survive the castle itself. Two older maids sneer at her silk curtains and predict Reynald will throw her onto the street by nightfall. She hears every word. Instead of screaming, she makes them kneel in the sunlight and wait for the lord's return. When Reynald walks in, they beg for his protection. He listens, then turns to the maid administering the punishment. "How many slaps has it been?" Ten, my lord. "Then give them ten more from me." The maids are dragged to the laundry house by the river, and Elinor understands the terms of their arrangement: he will back her authority without question.
Audric is dragged back in ropes with the singer girl bound beside him. He sees Elinor and sneers—he thinks she came to beg. She lets him talk. Then she delivers the blow: she never married him. She married his father. The color drains from his face. "You married my father? You'd rather be my mother than admit you were thrown away like trash?" Elinor stands tall and asks the guard what punishment Montaigne law prescribes for disrespecting the lord's wife. Loss of a finger, my lady. Audric crumbles. Reynald emerges from the shadows behind the desk, hears his son call Elinor a venomous bitch, and increases the sentence himself: twenty-five lashes with the iron-hook whip, followed by a month in the crypt reciting three hundred years of blood feuds.
In the candlelit crypt, the enforcer raises his arm. The first crack echoes like a thunderclap. Elinor doesn't look away. By the tenth lash, Audric's screams turn to ragged sobs. By the twentieth, he is silent. Among the gathered family, Florence—Audric's aunt—presses a handkerchief to her lips as if stifling a sob. But as the guards drag Audric past her, her hand lowers for a split second, and Elinor catches it: a twitch of a smile. With Audric falling from grace, the line of succession has cracked open. Florence's son Marcus is now the strongest candidate. Elinor has won her position, but the crypt makes one thing clear: the family around her is already calculating their next move.
