Eighteen years ago, a boy named Theodore was burned alive saving three girls. He did not die. He became the High Priest of the Pantheon, then lost his memory and power. The three girls grew into Queen Sylvia, Governor Kathrine, and the bard Lyanna. They killed the dragon that took him from them, only to learn he was still alive.
Now Theodore is Ilion, a nameless drudge in a slum tavern. He remembers nothing. Lillia and her mother Martha keep him working for no pay, and he believes he owes Lillia his life. He has saved for five years to buy a diamond necklace and propose at the harvest festival.
Two groups are already closing in. Raven, a Pantheon shadow scout, finds him first. She places a Guardian mark and confirms his identity. Paladin Commander Aurelia is mustering heavy paladins. On the other side, Sylvia tastes wine in his tavern and feels the Stella element. She orders Daphne to investigate him. Kathrine and Lyanna are searching too.
At the harvest festival, Lillia announces her real fiancé, Charles of the Tanga family. Ilion steps forward with the necklace. Lillia asks how she could ever marry him. Charles orders him to kneel. Ilion refuses. The blade rises.
The three women who owe him their lives are close enough to burst through the crowd. The Pantheon paladins are racing. He is still on his knees. The final stroke is about to fall.
