Janet Lind, adopted daughter of the Lind family, stands outside a door and hears her boyfriend Steve making a choice—her stepsister Jocelyn or her. Jocelyn's voice cuts through: "Isn't she just an adopted daughter? What's so great about her?" Janet walks in, tells Steve to take Jocelyn if he wants her, and ends things on the spot. She doesn't want anything Jocelyn has touched. But Jocelyn has a bigger problem: she is engaged to a landless knight named Arthur, and to escape the marriage, she announces she is pregnant with Steve's child. Janet's stepmother Fiona seizes the opportunity—Janet will marry Arthur in Jocelyn's place. When Janet refuses, Fiona names her price: the druid healer fees for Hannah, Janet's gravely ill nursemaid. Without those coins, Hannah dies. Janet agrees. The groom arrives late, devastatingly handsome, wearing a gem badge only the royal family should possess. He calls it a replica. He and Janet strike a quiet agreement: in public, husband and wife; in private, stay out of each other's way. They shake on it. That night, patrol knights break in to harass the bride. Janet recites military law coldly and threatens to ring the bell—enough to get them dismissed. Arthur watches, intrigued. When she later rifles through his things and finds a defense map, he catches her. "Why would a knight without a fief have a defense map?" she asks. "And why would a vain Lind lady know how to read one?" he counters. Neither answers.
The next day, Janet returns to Lind Keep alone to collect the promised gold coins. Fiona stalls—the family invested in a shell guild and has nothing left. Jocelyn mocks her. Janet's father Bernie shouts that he has no daughter like her and throws her out. Arthur appears in the doorway. He came bearing gold, silver, and jewelry, but after hearing Bernie disown her, he decides the gifts are unnecessary. Fiona and Jocelyn's faces shift instantly. He humiliates them with cold politeness and walks out, leaving the jewels behind only after they beg. Janet is stunned—he stood up for her after hearing just one sentence. He says he borrowed the jewels from a ceremonial goods house, and the porter who carried them is just a friend. Janet doesn't quite believe him. She starts looking for work to pay Hannah's healer fees herself, relying on her tactical deduction and rune weaving training from the Knights Academy. Her interview at the Knights Guild goes perfectly—she solves an advanced exam meant for knights with three years of experience—but the interviewer Elaine, an old academy rival who resents Janet for attracting the upperclassman Elaine liked, rejects her on grounds of "despicable character." The next morning, a formal apology arrives. The failure notice has been withdrawn. Janet walks into a grand meeting hall to find Gawain, a knight of the Round Table and lieutenant to the King of Knights, waiting to address what happened. Elaine stands nearby, distressed and afraid.
