Laila was branded a jinx by Vincent, then adopted by Don Alaric Voss. Her curse becomes the Voss family's blessing—and exposes who destroyed her mother.
Laila is five. She collects bottles to buy her sick mother soda, so the medicine tastes less bitter. The neighborhood already calls her a jinx. Last month she said a car would crash, and old man Miller got hit on the spot. When Rosa died, they said the freak had cursed her own mother to death. Laila said mommy was just sleeping.
Vincent Moretti, her father, was handed his daughter at the station. He said he had given up custody in the divorce and did not care what happened to the freak. Send her to an orphanage, or let her rot on the street. Mia, his other daughter, told her that daddy only had one daughter.
Alaric Voss found Laila at the station. His mother Carmela had threatened to burn down his casino and docks unless he brought home a granddaughter. He asked Laila if she wanted a new daddy and claimed her for the Voss family. At the estate, Carmela, Vittorio, Santino, and Jaden took her in without hesitation. Laila offered her bottle money and said she could wipe tables and would not be any trouble. Carmela declared her the Voss family's one and only granddaughter.
Jaden, the family's former top hitman, had wrecked legs and had given up. Laila refused to leave his side, stayed out in the rain all night, and bought him soda with the bottle money she had saved. He said he would never try to kill himself again. Then he felt his feet and stood up.
The Meretti ambushed the Voss cargo at the docks. Jaden arrived on his feet and saved Alaric. The sniper aimed at Laila, and Jaden moved to shield her.
Alaric brought Laila aboard the annual cargo auction to show New Corinth who really ran the shipping lanes. Mia cornered her, said the pendant held the ashes of a beggar, and told Vincent to throw it away. He did. Then he demanded Laila apologize for pushing Mia, which she never did. Alaric arrived and said it plainly: "Layla is my daughter and the Voss family's one and only untouchable crown jewel." Vincent called her a jinx who cursed her own mother. Alaric told him to say it one more time.
The auction began. The Voss family bid one hundred million dollars on every cargo box on the ship. Vincent had inside information and planned to take the north district. Everyone expected the jinx to sink the Voss family. She was the reason they were about to win.
