Lina, a college student carrying student-loan debt, takes summer work as a cleaner on remote Blackwater Island. She can read how much someone likes her and what they want from her in the moment. At a dinner party, Vincent Crowe, the island's owner, corners her. Evelyn, a ghost, appears and invites the dinner party to a game.
Vincent tries to shoot her; the bullet vanishes and Evelyn's monster kills him. She takes the island, makes the guests drink wine laced with blood and bugs, and kills one who refuses. Lina reads the room: the monsters obey Evelyn, Evelyn sets the rules, and Evelyn wants her closer. Getting closer becomes Lina's only exit.
Lina acts on that read and kisses Evelyn. The guests expect her to die. Evelyn lets her live. After a failed run for a boat, Lina takes Evelyn's hand; the affection readout rises and Evelyn opens a path back inside.
A scratched old woman starts to turn. Evelyn's next game pairs the guests for a dance, with death for wrong steps or no partner. One guest chooses the mutating woman; Lina is left alone and picks Evelyn. Evelyn keeps her alive through the dance.
Afterward, Evelyn orders a vote: one guest must stay alone with the mutating old woman, and no one may volunteer, including Evelyn. The group votes Lina. The old woman wakes long enough to call the game punishment for what they did back then; Evelyn pulls Lina out. When accused of breaking her own rule, Evelyn turns the charge on the guest who forced the votes.
The third game confines each guest to a room until the wake-up bell and warns them not to answer a voice, open the door, or react to a bedside figure. Another guest answers a mother's voice and opens the door to monsters. Lina resists Evelyn's voice, but at dawn answers her mother's and sees through the fake. When an Evelyn with no affection readout blocks her, Lina decides the room is a dream: her real body is still in bed, so leaving the dream room is not breaking the rule—and it is her only way out.
Later, Lina learns most survivors are Evelyn's attackers from twenty years ago. The survival bond with Evelyn becomes genuine love. Lina gathers evidence for justice instead of revenge and lays Evelyn's spirit to rest. Back in reality, Evelyn's faint presence stays by her side.
