Sylvia is a phoenix born with a shattered magic core — the result of her mother Seraphina hurling her unhatched egg at a maid in a fit of rage. Deemed a worthless disgrace, beaten and told to die, she is eventually handed off to Marnie, an aging owl servant, and sent far away. Marnie raises her with patience and sacrifice, trading her own feather for Sylvia's place at a magic academy and risking her life in dangerous realms to find potions that can repair the damaged core. After two hundred years of relentless effort, Sylvia transforms into the strongest fire mage her academy has ever seen. But when she finally encounters her mother and her perfect sister Elena at a tournament, Seraphina denies ever knowing her and declares Elena the only true phoenix princess. A public wager follows — if Sylvia wins, her mother must apologize; if she loses, she destroys her own core. When Sylvia gains the upper hand, her mother strikes her down with a wave of flame.
