Hayes Harrington gave up her career to become a full-time mother. Twenty years later, Richard Carter brings his secretary Amber to a family dinner and orders Hayes to get dinner ready. At the table, Chloe Carter belittles her mother, Richard demands a 50/50 marriage, and Chloe calls Hayes a leech.

Hayes agrees to the rules and has them recorded, with Chloe and Amber as witnesses. Shared bills split; personal expenses are each person's own. Amber calls it independence. Chloe calls Hayes a trophy wife. Hayes reminds them the rules are Richard's.

The 50/50 rule turns against Richard. Hayes charges him for breakfast and refuses to wash his bowl. She points to the video of their agreement. Richard calls her impossible and storms out. Hayes watches him go and thinks, "Let's see who really can't survive without the other."

Carter Group goes public. At the IPO dinner, Richard thanks the company's largest shareholder and credits Amber as the real MVP. He gives her a necklace. Chloe posts a video titled "Family of three living our best life!" Hayes sees it.

Hayes calls Michael and orders him to sell off every share of Carter Group stock she owns. She is the company's mysterious major shareholder and legendary Wall Street trader H.

Later, Hayes ruins Richard, divorces him, takes control of Carter Group, and begins a new life with Alexander.

That's when she calls Michael. Sell everything. Richard thinks he is teaching his wife independence. He is actually handing her the exit. She was the major shareholder all along.
