Jenna Carson, the illegitimate daughter of the Carson family, was married off to Kevin Mason to pay for her mother's care. After a year, the marriage is still sexless and Kevin won’t touch her. She goes to a clinic for discomfort and is examined by Dr. Wayne Burke. He notices a scar from her childhood, when she stepped in to help a boy and got cut on a branch. Wayne recognizes her as the girl he spent fifteen years looking for. He gives her medication and asks her to come back in a week.

Wayne is not only a doctor. He runs the city's mob. After he handles a debtor, Evan Burke, his cousin, mocks him for playing gynecologist. Wayne threatens him, cousin or not. Wayne orders his men to dig into Jenna's husband and to call him the moment she returns.

At home, Jenna tries to save the marriage by putting something in Kevin's drink. Kevin rejects her, bans her from his room, and tells her to take care of herself. She sees a hickey, then overhears him with another woman. Kevin says his father wanted a respectable wife for appearances. "Once I get my inheritance she's gone." Jenna connects the woman to her best friend Della Hayes. She decides to earn the money for her mother herself and divorce Kevin.
