In a home ruled by a lie-detector band, a mother trusts the device over her own daughter. From birth, Stella wears the Verity Band—green means truth, red means lie—while her twin sister Emma's always glows green, even when she lies, steals, or blames Stella. Stella's band flashes red no matter what she says, leading to years of punishment and the creeping belief that she might be broken. On New Year's Eve, Stella collapses in agony, but the band glows red, and her mother dismisses it as another act, locking her in her room before leaving to watch fireworks. Alone and in pain, Stella writes a required apology; the moment she finishes, her pain stops, and she finds herself floating above her own lifeless body. For three days, no one checks on her. Her mother ignores the growing smell, even sealing the door with tape. When she finally forces the door open, armed with a rolling pin to punish a "performance," she expects a defiant child ready to apologize. Instead, she finds Stella's body, the band still flashing red on her wrist.
