After a car crash leaves Matthew Carter and his twin Emily injured, Nona Carter orders Dr. Paul Barkley to drain Emily's blood to save Matthew. The doctor warns that Emily is wounded too. Nona answers, "I don't care if she lives or dies." Matthew survives. Emily is left with too little blood.

Kurt Carter pleads that Emily is also family. Nona says Matthew is the sole heir. Nona orders Ross Butler to leave no trace, and Emily is dumped outside a convenience store. Jack Brown, buying alcohol, finds her and adopts her. Eighteen years later she is Lily.

Jack is a high-rise window cleaner. Carter Group owes him seventy thousand in unpaid wages. Lily works at Carter Group and goes to collect the money, crossing Matthew. Victoria Carter learns Matthew fought with a cleaner's daughter and calls her untouchable filth.

At the Carter building, Matthew humiliates Lily and Jack. Victoria slaps Lily and orders her to kneel and apologize. Lily refuses. Victoria threatens Jack's pay and Lily's job. Matthew offers to release Lily and return the wages if Jack cleans the outside of the ninth-floor window. Jack does it. Matthew kicks him off while he is cleaning, and Jack lands on a car parked below. Matthew then claims Jack dented his car and turns the seventy thousand into a hundred-seventy-thousand debt. Victoria has them thrown out.

Back home, Jack reveals Lily's origins. He found her eighteen years ago, barely alive, and gave her his blood because they share the same rare blood type. He gives her a picture and a red dress. The Carter family still does not know Lily is Emily.

At Carter home, Victoria plans the thirtieth anniversary banquet and assigns her children roles; after three years, the best performer will be named successor. The family mourns Emily, calling her the brightest, and Matthew says he would give his own life to have her back. The same family that drained and discarded her is still searching for her.

At the banquet, Jack offers a pie. Matthew rejects it and demands the repair money. He makes Jack lie down and open his mouth as a golf hole, ten thousand dollars a shot. Jack takes seven shots. Matthew makes him pick the money out of a dog bowl with his mouth, then attacks him. Lily pushes Matthew. Matthew threatens to pour wine down Lily's throat; Jack warns she is alcohol allergic and it could kill her. Matthew wants to see how dangerous his fine wine is. The family still does not know the cleaner's daughter they are tormenting is the Emily they mourn.
