Elara finds Cassius with Lyra, then keeps Sera close while a vampire queen's secret chases them. The wedding becomes a trap, and Elara's ally is her darkest risk.
Elara finishes her wedding gown by hand and goes to show Cassius. She finds him with Lyra. Cassius calls the marriage nothing but the late king's will, and one of them plans the day the throne is taken—Elara gets buried. The wedding dream dies there.
That night, Elara cries alone. A stranger appears, takes her injured hand, and tends to it. Elara drinks too much and kisses her. By morning the stranger is still there, dressed as a servant with blood on her clothes. Elara asks her to stay as her handmaid.
The maid calls herself Sera. She is tied to vampire queen Seraphina, disguised to find a traitor inside the palace. Her people note Elara's blood is potent, more than any antidote, and suggest keeping her as a blood slave. The order comes to stay away from Elara.
Elara plans to cancel the betrothal. Cassius refuses and makes it clear vampires leave humans, never the other way around. Lyra spots the vampire mark on Elara's neck and pushes for punishment. Elara denies being with anyone and admits she wanted the betrothal gone long ago. Cassius promises to make her life hell.
Sera searches Cassius's study. Elara grabs papers before guards arrive. They contain coded letters pointing to Cassius planting a mole to poison the queen, his stepmother. But Sera doubts the evidence—Cassius would never leave something that could kill him in a drawer, and he has called the queen mother since he was seven. The letters feel planted. Sera kisses Elara and says, "I couldn't stop myself from kissing you." They retreat to Elara's secret place, where Sera nearly forgets the feeling after three hundred years. A werewolf attack calls her away.
Lyra shows Elara something of Sera's and forces her to go through with the wedding. At the ceremony, Lyra publicly accuses Elara of being marked by a vampire, calls her a harlot, and invokes tradition to demand the stake. Elara's father disowns her. Elara accepts whatever comes as long as Sera is safe. Sera feels the blood bond, knows Elara is in danger, but is stopped by werewolves before she can reach her.
