Lyra, a four-year-old child of elven blood, is abandoned in the forest by her human family after they have their own son. A mother wolf tells her she is a child of elves, blessed to speak with every living thing, and promises to find her a father who will truly cherish her.

Lyra saves Alistair Monfort, an earl, from a wolf attack. He takes her home and adopts her. His wife Nora is dead, leaving his son Theo gravely ill. Arabella Crawley, Alistair's fiancée, has been poisoning Theo so her own child can inherit the title. Lyra hears the animals talk about it and stops Theo from drinking the poisoned medicine. Theo recovers.

Theo rejects Lyra at first, calling her a little beggar. When Arabella's servant frames Lyra for stealing Theo's cat, Lyra speaks with the animals and exposes the lie. The servant confesses to the poisoning and the frame-up, but Arabella is behind it and stays in the house. Theo accepts Lyra.

Three years of drought drain House Montfort's fortune. Alistair enters the Palio horse race to win the prize money. Lyra tells him to buy the red horse instead of the black one. Magnus, a rival noble, buys the black horse.

The race begins, and the red horse falls behind. Arabella offers to cover Alistair's debts if he sells Lyra, and threatens to end the engagement otherwise. Alistair refuses: "I will never give her up." Theo stands with Lyra too.

The red horse makes a late surge. Lyra's luck begins to turn House Montfort's fate around.
