Arina Carmilla, head of the Carmilla line and Queen of the Night, gave up her crown and immortality for Anson Black. She poured her family's power into him, restoring his noble seat and turning him into the state's most celebrated CEO. A car crash took her unborn child and left her barren. She offered Anson a divorce. He refused and dismissed the child as nothing compared to her.
Arina came home and overheard Viktor Hale, an associate of Anson's, confront Anson about the crash. Anson had staged it because Mara Delancy, his secretary and former love, did not want him to have a child with another woman. Anson dismissed the risk: "Even if she found out, she'd never do anything to me." Arina had already arranged a ten-billion order for him, set to be signed on their wedding anniversary. She let it stand. Her servant Nightingale Vesper warned that a full change back was almost impossible, but Arina chose to push Anson into the abyss herself and make him watch his money and power slip away.
Anson kept playing the devoted husband. He prepared gifts and took Arina to a Black Rose shooting club. Mara Delancy brought a custom pistol, her hand cut from carrying it. Anson checked whether Mara's hand hurt. Other guests mistook Mara for his wife. Arina recognized the crest on Mara's gun as the one she had designed for Black Rose; Mara's pistol was the real custom piece. To Arina, Anson had never given even a shred of sincerity.
Arina sent Anson to check the target and prepared to test the gun. In seven days, on their wedding anniversary, she intended to make him understand what betraying her cost. After that, Arina returns and takes back what was hers. Anson tries to win her back, but someone new already guards her throne.
