Mia falls asleep reading a werewolf novel and wakes as an abandoned pup on Stormfang's north border. Marcus Hawthorne, the Stormfang Alpha, and his eldest son Ethan find her. Mia knows the novel: the Hawthorne family is doomed, destroyed by Serena Vale, the Ironclaw Alpha's daughter. Her thought—"she's the one who destroys this whole family"—reaches the Hawthornes, who hear her every thought without her knowing.
Serena arrives and holds the baby. Mia's nose bleeds. Serena blames the cold. Ethan grows suspicious, but Marcus refuses to accuse Serena of harming a baby.
Ryan says he has not fed his falcon yet. Mia's thought warns that Serena will kill it and take its Fortune. Ryan changes his mind and goes to check on her, and Ethan comes with him. They arrive to find the falcon cut but not drained. A servant saw only Serena enter. Ryan says Serena was already trying to help when he got there. Ethan stays suspicious. Mia's thoughts warn of Cole's ambush: three wolves at the old stone bridge, the third going for his right arm. The Hawthornes ride for East Ravine. The warning spares Cole.
Serena drops the act the moment they are gone. She locks Mia in, drains her Fortune, and raises a silver blade. Ethan reaches the door.
Serena claims she was calming the baby. Marcus rules that Serena can stay but never care for Mia alone. Mia turns to the warded mantle in the relic hall—the thing that keeps Serena alive again and again in the book—and plans to reach it first.
